VORDINGBORG: The case of Mayor Mikael Smed's (S) alleged abuse of power in connection with the sale of a building plot in Klintholm Havn continues to generate debate. It now appears that Vordingborg Municipality has spent 1.2 million kroner on legal fees alone. This is reported by SN.dk.
The case began when the municipality sold a plot of land to MMA Offshore, which used it to build a crew hotel. Citizen Susanne Lis Larsen, who had bid 700,000 kroner more than MMA Offshore, appealed the decision, as she believed the process was unfair.
The City Court acquitted the municipality, but the Eastern High Court subsequently criticized the mayor and the municipality for having acted in a misuse of power.
According to the High Court's judgment, there was no doubt that the municipality had "a strong political desire to make Klintholm Port attractive as a service port for wind turbine operators who built offshore wind turbines in the area at Klintholm.". This has DK Nyt previously described.
"Potential loss of two million kroner"
In addition to the 1.2 million kroner bill to Horten's law firm, the municipality has also had to pay 100,000 kroner for Susanne Lis Larsen's legal costs. City council member Søren Hansen (DF) is a sharp critic of the process, writes SN.dk.
He points out that the municipality could have sold the land for 660,000 kroner more if the process had been fair. According to him, the municipality has thus potentially lost almost two million kroner.
- It's about fairness - and the citizen has not been treated properly in this case. I can fear that it is a trend where things are done in a way that there is no free competition in the municipality, he says.
