Surplus heat can make Viborg free of natural gas

The change in law means that Viborg can finally move forward with plans to utilize surplus heat and free itself from natural gas.

VIBORG: For many years, Viborg Varme has worked to be allowed to utilize the surplus heat from Apple's data center and Energinet for district heating, but the price cap on surplus heat has hindered the project. Now, the price cap will disappear from July 1, 2025, so Viborg Varme can finally move forward with the plans.

While they were waiting for the change in law, Viborg Varme has electrified the district heating by purchasing two additional heat pump systems and a large 50 MW electric boiler.

With the change in law, Viborg Varme now expects that in combination with their three heat pumps and their new electric boiler, they can become completely free from heating with natural gas:

- With the surplus heat on top of that, we will be able to be 100 percent capable of delivering all year round. In terms of our CO2 accounts alone, it will save us around 90,000 tons. This is a large part of our CO2 emissions, so we will go from a fairly large emission to almost zero over the coming years, explains Kristian Brøns Nielsen, chairman of the board of Viborg Varme, and continues:

- In addition to that, we have around 3,500 households in Viborg that are fired directly with natural gas. They also want district heating, so that is also one of the things we are working on in addition to surplus heat. We can supply them with the capacity we already have today, but we are dependent on natural gas. And we need to get away from that.

It will cost 266 million DKK to get all households on the district heating network, but in return the surplus heat from Apple's data center is completely free. Preliminary calculations estimate that the surplus heat will provide a positive corporate economy of just over 36 million DKK per year.
