Several senior citizens have been tricked into transferring money because fraudsters pretended to be from an energy company or a bank. This is according to the East Jutland Police, who on Wednesday arrested three people who are charged with extensive fraud.

One of the accused is a 34-year-old man from Aarhus, who according to the police played a leading role in the fraud. He will therefore be produced in a constitutional hearing in Aarhus, where a prosecutor will demand his detention. The other two arrested - a 30-year-old woman from Aarhus and a 30-year-old man from Esbjerg - will be released again.

According to the charges, the frauds took place from February to November this year. It is primarily elderly citizens from Funen who were called and defrauded by the perpetrators, who in various ways lured them into transferring money while they had it on the phone.

Among other things, the elderly citizens were led to believe that they had to pay a bill.

Does not disclose amount

The police do not disclose the exact amounts that have been defrauded. But it must be large amounts. Furthermore, it is not clear which energy company the fraudsters have pretended to be.

- These are large amounts that the perpetrators have gained from the frauds in total, and it has affected innocent elderly citizens who have transferred money in good faith. We are therefore also very satisfied that our investigation and Wednesday's action have led to the arrest of three suspects. We are continuing the investigation, and we expect that more arrests will be made in the case later, says Deputy Police Inspector Thomas Schouby in the press release from the East Jutland Police.

The prosecutor will request closed doors for Wednesday's constitutional hearing. In that case, the police evidence will be kept secret, just as it will not be possible to hear what the 34-year-old man may explain.

The press release does not state how the accused are acting in the case.
