Climate-friendly components will help future-proof the Eastern Danish electricity grid

Nexel is in the process of future-proofing the electricity grid in Eastern Denmark in the most sustainable way. Therefore, a tender for transformer stations without the powerful greenhouse gas SF6 for approximately DKK 900 million has just been awarded.

The Eastern Danish grid companies, Cerius-Radius, and their operating company, Nexel, need many new grid stations, which are the medium-sized transformer stations in the distribution network, when the electricity grid is to be expanded to meet future demand. The supply of these components for the Eastern Danish grid has just been put out to tender, and this is the first time that it has only been possible for interested suppliers to bid without the powerful greenhouse gas SF6, which has so far been firmly accepted in this type of plant. The company writes in a press release.

The two-part tender has now been decided in favor of three suppliers. Priess A/S and KL Industri AB have won the tender for complete solutions for grid stations, while Eaton will in future supply loose components for the existing grid stations in Cerius-Radius' electricity grid. The tender has an estimated value of DKK 900 million. DKK, and it will run for the next three years with the possibility of a two-year extension.

- The green transition of our energy consumption is in full swing, with many turning their backs on fossil fuels in favor of electricity. The expansion and reinforcement of the electricity grid plays an absolutely crucial role. We want to lead the way and ensure that this happens in the most responsible and sustainable way, where we move away from SF6, where possible, in favor of new innovative solutions, says Frederik Dalgård Andersen, head of Cerius-Radius.

First grid stations are ready before the summer holidays

Nexel is a leader when it comes to creating a future-proof electricity grid in Eastern Denmark.

- We want to meet customer demand as quickly as possible, and security of supply is crucial here. Therefore, it has also been important for Nexel that the tender fell in favor of several suppliers to ensure that we can always source components, even if one partner experiences challenges. The tender has attracted great interest, and we can see that the market for SF6-free components has really taken off now, and we are pleased to be able to support this,” says Tomas Christensen, CEO of Nexel, and continues:

- The demand for electricity is historically high. We expect to have to install approximately 800 of these grid stations in 2024, which is double the number compared to 2022. These grid stations are among the ones that are located at the fast-charging stations that are popping up all over our supply area these years.

Cerius-Radius and Nexel expect the first grid stations from this tender to be delivered before the summer holidays.
The grid stations in Cerius-Radius’ electricity network are the transformer stations where the voltage level goes from 10 kV to 0.4 kV. SF6 is an insulating gas that can prevent short circuits in 10 kV systems. In the new systems, the gas has been replaced with vacuum technology and atmospheric air.
