After a number of years of healthy development and stable profits of millions, the Port of Thyborøn has for the first time entered a year with a deficit. Thyborøn Port writes this in a press release.

- You could say that we have run into the perfect storm during our development, but we are not shaking our hands because of that, says the chairman of the Port of Thyborøn board, Karl Kristian Bro.

The Port of Thyborøn's accounts for 2024 show a turnover of over 51.53 million. DKK, which is the second highest in the port's history. Nevertheless, the year's result is a deficit of 3.6 million. DKK, primarily due to challenges in the fishery and extraordinary maintenance costs.

The UK's decision to close the sandeel fishery on Dogger Bank has had consequences for the industrial fishermen in Thyborøn, where there is a long tradition of good landings of sandeel. At the same time, restructuring and falling quotas have put pressure on consumer fishing. Overall, 2024 was the worst year for fishing in Thyborøn in the past 12 years.

In addition to the challenges of fishing, the port has had significant maintenance costs, including cleaning the entrance and the port basins. In addition, costs for a director search and salaries for two directors during a transitional period have had an effect on the accounts.

- We have had a long period of stable profits at the port, and the equity of 151 million. DKK means that we can easily take such a fluctuation, says Karl Kristian Bro.
- In the long term - already this year - we expect to get positive results again, says the chairman.

Compared to 2023, the total cargo volume has decreased slightly, but has overall been on par with previous years and ended in 2024 at 1.625 million tons. Stone and gravel have had a slight decline, while high-value cargo types such as chemicals and oil are on the rise. Over the past 10 years, cargo turnover has grown from 0.8 million tons to over 1.6 million tons, which strengthens the Port of Thyborøn's position among Denmark's largest cargo ports.

The offshore sector has proven to be a stable business for the Port of Thyborøn, even in a year without installation projects. Offshore activities accounted for 14 percent of the port's turnover in 2024.

In 2025, fishing is expected to continue to be challenged, but there are growth opportunities in other sectors where the port has invested in recent years. Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy A/S is currently using the port's areas for temporary storage of tower sections for delayed American offshore wind farms, while the German energy company RWE is using the Port of Thyborøn as an installation port for foundation parts for Denmark's upcoming largest offshore wind farm, Thor. This project includes components for 72 wind turbines and is one of the largest in the port's history.

In the coming years, construction of a quay facility at Sydhavnen for heavy components is planned, but no major construction costs are expected in 2025. Karl Kristian Bro is optimistic, however, and expects a year with a profit, where the result will be above the average for recent years.
