Lidegaard: The government is not taking the phasing out of Russian gas seriously

Europe has reduced its dependence on Russian energy in recent years, but according to the leader of the Danish Radical Party, Martin Lidegaard, the efforts are insufficient. He sharply criticizes both the EU and Denmark's Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard (M) for hesitating to make Europe completely free of Russian gas. This is reported by Berlingske.

Figures from the Finnish think tank CREA show that the EU has significantly reduced its energy imports from Russia. Europe now imports less gas, oil and coal from Russia than both China and India. According to Brian Vad Mathiesen, professor of energy planning at Aalborg University, Russia is no longer crucial to the EU's energy supply. He estimates that the EU can completely phase out Russian gas in 2027. Nevertheless, Martin Lidegaard believes that the pace is too slow. He emphasizes that the Danish government has been too slow to phase out gas boilers and criticizes Lars Aagaard for not taking the problem seriously.

- The government has hesitated when it comes to phasing out gas boilers. They would start doing that as early as 2022, but the municipalities are still waiting for them to be rolled out, says Martin Lidegaard, political leader of the Danish Social Democrats.

The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities states that around 80,000 gas boilers have been phased out since 2022, of which over 21,000 in 2024 alone. Lars Aagaard also denies that Danish gas trading companies import gas directly from Russia, but acknowledges that there is still Russian gas in the European system. He therefore supports a new sanctions package in the EU that will make it more difficult to get Russian gas onto the market.
