After a year of testing together with suppliers TME and CS WIND Offshore, Ørsted has approved a recyclable tarpaulin material for monopile covers. The measure will prevent an average of 10 tons of waste per offshore project from ending up in landfill. Ørsted writes in a press release.

Monopile covers, also known as TP covers, protect the foundation and cables of offshore wind turbines during construction. Ørsted has worked to solve the environmental challenge of these covers, which must be of sufficient quality to protect against the weather.

To find a solution, Ørsted first tested all options for industrial recycling of the traditional material, but none of them proved to be suitable. TME then proposed a new recyclable material, which was tested both in a physical endurance test at CS WIND Offshore and through laboratory tests. The material will now be used for the first time during the construction of Hornsea 3, the world's largest offshore wind farm, after extensive testing has shown that it can protect the offshore installations. Once construction is complete, the material can be recycled, eliminating the need for new materials.

- At Ørsted, we believe that protecting our environment can go hand in hand with innovation and efficiency. This collaboration with TME and CS WIND Offshore shows that it is possible to design waste out of the box without compromising quality or increasing costs, says Ørsted's head of construction sustainability Rasmus Uldahl Kjeldsen.

According to Jess Westcott, project director for Hornsea 3 at Ørsted, the initiative is an important part of the green transition:

- One of our ambitions with Hornsea 3 is to become the greenest offshore wind farm to date. Using reusable monopole covers is another positive step on the sustainable journey, he says.
