Esbjerg Shipyard chooses Nordhavn Power Solutions technology for major order
In November, a joint venture between the German offshore wind company O.S. Energy and the investment and asset manager MPC Capital invested up to one billion DKK in the West Jutland company Esbjerg Shipyard. The investment involves an order for up to six specially built offshore survey and service vessels.
Now, Esbjerg Shipyard has chosen Nordhavn Power Solutions as a subcontractor for part of that order. The first vessel will thus be equipped with three plants from Nordhavn Power Solutions, including generator plants for both methanol and diesel. This is stated by Nordhavn Power Solutions in a press release.
According to Jørk Rudolph, Sales Director at Nordhavn Power Solutions, the dual fuel solution gives customers increased flexibility and the possibility of conversion in the future.
- With our dual fuel solution, customers do not have to commit to a 100 percent methanol-based solution right away. They can replace the diesel engine with a methanol engine when the time is right. It's a step in the right direction, and it's great that O.S. Energy and MPC Capital are taking this step in the market," says Jørk Rudolph.
Ready for green fuels
The vessels are designed to achieve significant net reductions in CO2 emissions by using green methanol and electricity from zero-emission sources. This configuration increases operational flexibility and enables the vessels to adapt to different customer needs.
- Dual fuel typically refers to engines that can use both marine gas oil (MGO) and methanol or LNG. In our case, the installed engines are optimized for a single type of fuel. We have one engine that runs on MGO and another that runs on methanol, explains Peter Madsen, project manager at Esbjerg Shipyard.
Following a tendering process, the joint venture chose to award the contract to Esbjerg Shipyard. The shipyard was chosen because of its strong concept and solid network of subcontractors. The combination of high quality and competitive prices was crucial for the agreement.
- On our existing fleet, we have had very good experiences with Scania engines. In addition, Nordhavn Power Solutions has strong technical competences as a local representative for Scania and ScandiNAOS, especially within the methanol area, says Alexander Nürnberg, CEO of O.S. Energy.
O.S. Energy operates primarily in the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Irish Sea. According to Nürnberg, one of the reasons why the order went to Esbjerg Shipyard was that "people on the west coast of Jutland are used to the harsh environment, and this is reflected in the quality of the products and vessels."
For the development, financing and operation of the project, O.S. Energy has entered into a collaboration with MPC Capital, a German investment and asset manager specializing in maritime and energy infrastructures.
