The Port of Hirtshals is in the running for the ESPO Award, which will be awarded in early November 2024, with its project Greenport Scandinavia CCUS Hub. This year's award goes to the port with the circular economy project that is of greatest benefit to the local area.
Greenport Scandinavia is the result of a collaboration between the Port of Hirtshals and partners INEOS Energy, Wintershall Dea, Evida, Biocarb Solution, Greenport North and Aalborg Portland.
According to the Port of Hirtshals, the Greenport Scandinavia CCUS Hub is among Northern Europe's most visionary initiatives within CO2 export and import, with the goal of collecting, utilizing and storing more than 15,000,000 tons of CO2 annually, already by 2031. The project also promotes the growth of new green industries in the city, which contribute to a sustainable future. Therefore, there is optimism about taking home the award.
- There is fierce competition among the nine participating ports at the ESPO Award, with many visionary projects within the circular economy. But we are hopeful that our CCUS project will bring the award to Hirtshals, says Per Holm Nørgaard, CEO of the Port of Hirtshals, in a press release.
Choose the project with the greatest benefit to the local area
The European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) is awarding this year's ESPO Award to a European port that has made a remarkable effort within the circular economy and social integration in the local area. This is the 16th year of the competition, and the award is a recognition of the winning port's circular work and positive impact on all stakeholders of the project.
- The ESPO Award is primarily symbolic – but it is a strong symbol, says Per Holm Nørgaard and continues:
- It can emphasize the Port of Hirtshals' inspiring work with sustainability for other European ports and at the same time highlight the importance of our work with Greenport Scandinavia.
In addition to the Port of Hirtshals, the following ports have registered for the ESPO Award 2024: Port Antwerp-Bruges (Belgium), Port of Gdansk (Poland), Port of Bilbao (Spain), Port Authority of Castellón (Spain), Port Authority of Huelva (Spain), Port of Las Palmas (Spain), Port of Sevilla (Spain) and Gothenburg Port Authority (Sweden).
The award will be presented at an award show in Brussels on November 6, 2024, where an international jury will choose the winner.
