European Energy and Mitsui inaugurate Kassø e-methanol plant in May
European Energy and Mitsui have started e-methanol production at the Kassø PTX plant in Aabenraa Municipality. The plant has an annual capacity of 42,000 tonnes of e-methanol, equivalent to 53 million litres, making it the world's largest commercial e-methanol plant. European Energy writes in a press release.
Construction of the plant began in May 2023, with European Energy responsible for development, engineering, procurement and construction. Along the way, the company has had to secure 29 permits from Danish authorities. One of the primary customers of the e-methanol is A.P. Moller - Maersk, which will use it as a low-emission fuel for the container ship Laura Mærsk. The LEGO Group and Novo Nordisk will also use the e-methanol to reduce the CO? footprint of plastic materials.
- The commissioning of the plant is progressing rapidly, especially considering the complexity and groundbreaking nature of the project. We are very much looking forward to holding the inauguration ceremony on 13 May 2025, says Rene Alcaraz Frederiksen, CEO of Solar Park Kassø, which belongs to Kassø MidCo, which owns and operates the Kassø PTX plant.
In 2023, the Japanese group Mitsui acquired a 49% share in the plant and the associated solar park.
- This project marks an important step in the global transition to low-emission fuels, chemicals and materials, and we are ready to scale this effort. By combining European Energy's expertise in renewable energy with Mitsui's global experience in energy markets and industrial solutions, we believe that the plant will play a central role in the deployment of e-methanol. We look forward to continuing the collaboration and contributing to the decarbonization of sectors that are difficult to reduce CO? emissions from, says Tadaaki Ito, General Manager of Methanol & Ammonia Division at Mitsui.
The Kassø e-methanol plant is the second PTX plant that European Energy has developed and built. The first plant, a green hydrogen plant, was inaugurated in November 2024 in Esbjerg. European Energy is currently developing several PTX plants in Denmark and other markets.
- The development and construction of the Kassø PTX plant has given us valuable experience. In addition, we have developed several innovative solutions that we will implement in our future plants. This will enable us to further reduce the cost of green e-methanol, which is essential for realizing a fully electrified society—a society where we can reconcile industrial development and energy independence with solutions to the climate crisis, says Emil Vikjær-Andresen, EVP and Head of PTX at European Energy.
