Joe Biden was present for the inauguration, even though Trump was absent when Biden was sworn in in 2021.

What Trump intends to spend his four years at the helm of the world's largest economy, he revealed a little in his inauguration speech. The United States is facing a future where the country will be "bigger, stronger and more extraordinary than ever," he said.

It will be a "new era of national success," but first there are many challenges to be solved. First and foremost, illegal immigration at the southern border with Mexico must stop.

- I will declare a national emergency at our southern border, Trump said to standing ovation before continuing. All illegal entry will immediately cease. We will send millions and millions of criminal aliens back to where they came from.

Among other things, he will send American forces to the border to stop "the catastrophic invasion of our country".

And then he will reduce the cost of living for Americans. This will be done, among other things, by increasing national energy production.

National energy crisis

He declared a national energy crisis and warned that the United States will have to drill for oil to a much greater extent than today. There is "liquid gold under our feet", as he put it.

From the Danish side, particular attention was paid to whether Trump would mention Greenland in his speech. The question of Greenland's future has received a lot of attention recently, after Trump began expressing a desire for American control over Greenland before his inauguration. But Greenland was not mentioned at all. Instead, Trump focused on domestic policy issues.

For example, he also stated that the government's policy going forward will be that "there are only two genders: male and female".

However, he also lifted the veil on parts of his foreign policy. He wants to take back the Panama Canal and claimed that China has taken control of the important waterway that connects the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

- We didn't give it to China. We gave it to Panama. And we're taking it back, said Trump, who has not previously ruled out using military force against Panama.

Panama gained full control of the canal in 1999. Before that, Panama and the United States had jointly operated the canal.

In addition, he will introduce new tariffs and taxes against other countries, which are intended to "make Americans richer."

The entire ceremony took place under heavy security after an election campaign with several dramatic episodes. For example, Trump survived an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in July. He escaped with his life and a wound to his ear.
